A pallet jack is a simple and easy method of moving heavy objects from one location to another, and is often used in manufacturing plants, warehouses, and some large storage facilities to quickly and easily move pallet loads of goods. Simple to operate and effective with pallets designed to support large amounts of weight, pallet jacks usually are constructed with blades that slide under the pallet and are gently lifted with the use of a hydraulic motor.

Types of Pallet Jacks

Manual Pallet Jack

A manual pallet jack, commonly known as a hand truck is typically found in warehouses where pallets are stored primarily on the ground level. The manual pallet jack has no stacking abilities and carries the pallet a few inches off the ground. Manual pallet jacks are operator powered - an operator physically pushes or pulls the jack and controls movement with a simple steering mechanism. The forks slide underneath a pallet and the operator lifts the pallet using a lever to "jack" the pallet off the ground.

Powered Pallet Jack

A powered pallet jack is more suited for applications where pallets are stored in tall pallet racks or stacked in layers of two or more. The operator stands on a small platform and uses powered controls to operate the jack's lifting and transportation functions. The jack has a throttle, which allows for adjustments to the angle of the pallet on the forks.

Powered pallet jacks are often constructed with a seating area for the operator. When this configuration is used, the device is usually referred to as a pallet truck. Pallet trucks are very similar to forklifts, and provide much of the same type of maneuverability. Unlike forklifts, pallet trucks tend to be built for use in an indoor facility, rather than being constructed for both indoor and outdoor use.[1]
