A hoist is a suspended machinery unit that is used for lifting or lowering a freely suspended (unguided) load. It may be manually operated, electrically operated or pneumatically driven and may use chain or wire rope as its lifting medium.[1]
History of Hoists
While devices for lifting and transporting objects have been used for thousands of years, the invention of the hoist is commonly credited to the Greek inventor Archimedes. Archimedes developed a pulley system in the 3rd century BCE that was used for lifting ships out of the sea. Archimedes' pulley used a block and tackle system - a system still in use today. This pulley system was the precursor to the modern chain hoist.[2]
