Diesel engines are internal combustion engines that convert chemical energy into mechanical energy, which moves pistons up and down within cylinders. A diesel engine differs from a gasoline engine in that in a gasoline engine, fuel is mixed with air, compressed by pistons and ignited by sparks from spark plugs. In a diesel engine, however, the air is compressed before the fuel is injected. The fuel ignites because air heats up when it is compressed.[1]
