A column protector is designed to prevent damage to adjustable racking columns during loading and removal of pallets.[1]

Column protector can also refer to a device that surrounds interior building columns to protect them from vehicle collisions. These building column protectors are typically made of molded plastic in a structure that absorbs energy upon impact. Building column protectors are typically made in two halves and are fastened in a way to surround the building column.

Rack column protectors can be either rigid or energy-absorbing. Rigid type rack column protectors are typically bolted into the flooring directly in front of the rack to prevent access to the structure. Energy absorbing rack column protectors are typically attached directly to the rack column and absorb energy when struck by a fork truck or other vehicle.[2]

Warehouse rack damage is a major occupational health and safety issue as rack is not designed to withstand an impact from a lift truck. The column protectors provide increased safety for both people and product. When a column is damaged it has to be replaced or repaired which can prove costly in both time and man power. The most common benefit experienced in using column protectors is the lower cost of replacing a protector unit vs. an entire column.[3]
