Carton flow storage systems are flow racks designed for high volume order picking with reduced operator activity. The cartons are loaded on one side of the pallet rack system and are picked out of the other end giving a FIFO (first-in first-out) product flow. In use with pallet rack, this is a good way to incorporate case picking with product that generally picks by the layer from full pallets stored and can be designed to compliment the order filling traffic flow.[1]

Carton Flow Benefits

Carton flow maximizes SKU pick faces because only one case or carton of each SKU is presented to the picker. Incorporating pallet rack and mezzanine rack further enhances pick faces. Pick accuracy is enhanced when carton flow racks are combined with a pick-to-light system.[2]

A drive-through rack is an example of a carton flow system.

Additional Benefits of Carton Flow Pallet Rack

  • Considered first-in / first-out storage it creates the perfect turnover system.
  • Provides easy and quick access to additional quantities of the same product stored behind each carton or container.
  • Reduces time needed to prepare and pick orders.
  • Increases storage capacity.[3]
