In 1951, an artist living in Los Angeles took it upon himself to do something about a stack of unused pallets piling up outside the Schlitz Brewing Company in his neighborhood. Rather than dispose of or repair the discarded pallets, he decided to take a more artistic approach. Daniel Van Meter built the Tower of Wooden Pallets, a 25-foot-tall structure composed of more than five truckloads worth of pallets. The structure became so ingrained in local lore that in 1978 it was deemed a historic cultural monument. The tower has since began to degrade and was razed in 2006, though its memory still lives on in the locals’ hearts.
