While demand for truckload remains low, more market watchers continue to warn that truckload carriers are investing very minimally in new capacity, which means that when truckload demand does eventually return, freight buyers need to be prepared for tight capacity and higher rates.

In a recent survey of truckload carriers conducted by Transport Capital Markets, almost 70% of the industry says that it expects to add less than 10% to the current fleet in the next 12 months and only 1.6% say they are planning to add more than 33%.

"Capacity is not sustainable at the current level, which means that when tonnage does return, the capacity is not going to be there, and therefore, rates will increase," says Lana Batts, managing partner of Transport Capital Markets.
