Tax Concession Boosts R&D

- 5/22/2009
ANDROMEDA Industries claims AusIndustry’s R&D Tax Concession has helped it recycle old conveyor belts into erosion control solutions. Andromeda Industries is involved in aerospace, precision components, and bulk handling, employing 17 staff and just four engineers for the key task of research and development.

According to Andromeda Industries, the AusIndustry R&D Tax Concession helped it build a new $2m Advanced Engineering Division. The company has found ways to reuse old rubber conveyor belts from the mining sector. The belts, which are up to 1800mm wide, are sliced and punched to make them into solutions for stabilizing sand dunes, waterways and paths.

To process the conveyor belts, Andromeda Industries had to invent, design and construct a range of machinery in-house, such as hydraulic crimping tools and slicers. It also commissioned a $500,000 Enviro 40 Belt machine to punch various hole sizes and patterns in the belts.

Andromeda Industries’ Plaited & Woven division, meanwhile, has developed machine plaiting of “super flex cable” steel. This cable is used to make products such as slings for lifting, and recovery strops for pulling out bogged mining equipment.
