Plastic Pallet Controversy
- 5/5/2009
A series of press releases has sparked a heated debate between two of the industry’s leading pallet groups. Intelligent Global Pooling Systems (iGPS) has accused The National Wooden Pallet & Container Association (NWPCA) and CHEP, a pallet pooling company, of running a smear campaign against
plastic pallets in an effort to minimize competition in the pallet pooling field. A press release issued by iGPS asserts that CHEP is attempting to “thwart the growing preference for iGPS plastic pallets.”
Bob Moore, CEO of iGPS, has challenged CHEP to co-sponsor an independent study comparing the two companies’ pallets. “We are confident we would prevail in each and every aspect of the challenge,” says Moore in a press release.
Moore’s challenge, along with his accusation, comes in response to a press release issued by NWPCA last week. The document outlines the hazards associated with plastic pallets, and comes branded with a toxic “skull and crossbones” label. The document was posted on NWPCA’s Web site (
www.nwpca.org) and discusses fire hazards inherent with older plastic pallets as well as the dangers associated with the fire-retardant chemicals in the newer pallets. It wraps up with a reminder of the benefits and advantages of using wooden pallets.
The publication of this document evoked a speedy response from iGPS, which is mentioned by name in NWPCA’s warning document. In a responsive press release issued shortly after the publication of NWPCA’s warning, iGPS declares that the warning is “false and yet another attempt to thwart innovation and maintain CHEP’s virtual monopoly of wood rental pallets.” Moore claims that the information used to defame plastic pallets was taken out of context from a January 23, 2009 FDA letter.
