Springboro, OH – According to a survey by Supply Chain Digest, 37 percent of companies do their order picking using pallet jacks and 35 percent via order picker trucks in lieu of conveyor and sorting systems. The survey also found that 76 percent have medium to high concerns about case picking costs, and another 60 percent have medium to high concerns relative to inventory and order picking accuracy in case picking.

The primary reason given for companies not employing automated order picking is the need for flexibility. SKU diversity, customer order profile volatility and customer service requirements were cited as reasons for this. These companies also said they have become proficient enough with manual operations that acceptable ROI for other methods is beyond reach.
