New York, NY – U.S. C-17 planes have developed a back-up procedure when delivering pallets of supplies to remote and primitive airstrips that do not have forklifts that can unload the pallets.

“Combat offloading” involves opening the back loading platform of the C-17, while on the landing strip, and undoing the tie downs of the pallets so the pallets move freely on the floor. Then the aircraft, while the wheel brakes on, revs its engines. The aircraft then unlocks the brakes and moves quickly forward. The unsecured pallets in the back can then slide out of the aircraft and onto the ground.
