Nashville Wire Products Milestone

- 12/29/2009
Clark Barton Rollins was working at Phillips & Buttorf Manufacturing Co. in the late 1920s when he had an idea.

Like many stove manufacturers concentrated in Tennessee at the time, Phillips & Buttorf relied on Northern suppliers for its stove racks, which were costly and time-consuming to transport.

So, while still employed at Phillips & Buttorf, Rollins opened a small tool-and-die shop in the garage of his brother’s home on Main Street in East Nashville.

By 1934, the business had grown, and Rollins and his partners incorporated as Nashville Wire Products Manufacturing Co. The young company’s first order for 1,000 stove racks came from Dortch Stove Co. in Franklin.

"He saw a business opportunity to be a supplier closer to his customer and decided to take advantage of it," said Rollins’ son, David Rollins. "An opportunity is an opportunity, whether you have a recession or not."

That roll-with-the-economic-punches attitude has carried Nashville Wire Products through 75 years, 10 recessions and three generations of family ownership.

Today, the company ranks among Greater Nashville’s top privately owned companies, with revenue of $112M in 2008.

Nashville Wire is one of only four companies among the NBJ 100 that was founded during the granddaddy of all recessions: the Great Depression.
