Skokie, IL – The current state of the economy is causing potential retirees to continue working, which is turn is causing companies to reevaluate the safety of their loading dock equipment.

A report by the U.S. Department of Labor finds that fatalities for workers over the age of 55 is 10% higher compared to younger workers, mostly from transportation incidents, falls and being hit by an object, all of which can take place at a loading dock.

The American Society of Safety Engineers lays out suggestions for increasing safety for an aging workforce, such as eliminating heavy lifts, improving illumination, removing clutter from control panels and making floors skid resistant. Occupational Health & Safety magazine suggests companies with loading docks use dock doors with thick steel or plastic tracks, use LED dock lights and keep the dock tightly sealed to improve safety.
