Lax Labeling Practices Threaten MH Automation
- 7/22/2009
Springboro, OH –
Supply Chain Digest Editors
Cliff Holste and
Dan Gibson recently met with the compliance committee of the
Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions Association (VICS) in the hopes of winning the association’s support regarding retail
carton labeling issues.
As
wikiMHEDA reported on June 5, more and more retailers are requiring special placement for
UCC/GS1-128 carton labels from suppliers, ignoring the industry standard of placing labels in the lower right or along the side of the carton. This makes manual
picking operations and
automation difficult. Some retailers are also requiring that suppliers use only that retailer’s GS1-128 label on the carton, making it impossible for a manufacturer to track its own product in manufacturing and distribution.
According to
Supply Chain Digest, this is a threat to existing or potential
material handling automation systems and a major concern for material handling suppliers. It is the goal of the publication to raise awareness of the issue and find the support to stop it. This goal led Holste and Gibson to met with the VICS, an important setter of standards and guidelines for carton labeling.
Supply Chain Digest is still awaiting the association’s reply.
