As many as 150 people will be trained in fields where employers are having a hard time finding suitable workers, thanks to an $80,000 grant from the state of Pennsylvania to the Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission and its work force investment board.

News of the highly competitive grant from the state Department of Labor and Industry comes with word that the state is channeling $500,000 through Southern Alleghenies to be used as training money for the recall of more than 500 employees to JLG Industries, which has plants in Bedford and Fulton counties.

The money will provide training in the areas of machinery maintenance, computerized machining and supervisory development, said Susan Whisler, of Southern Alleghenies and director of the work force board.
