Gov. Contract Bill Introduced

- 5/27/2009
Washington, D.C. – Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., has introduced a bill to ensure that small business government contracts go to small businesses instead of large companies' subsidiaries. H.R. 2568, “The Fairness and Transparency in Contracting Act of 2009,” would modify the definition of a small business in the Small Business Act so that no publicly traded company can qualify as a small business in relation to these funds. It also allows a person to file a complaint if a small business contract was improperly awarded.

In 2002, at least 4.4 percent of 1,000 contractors awarded federal funds designated for small businesses did not meet basic requirements to receive those contracts. Large companies were awarded small business contracts by government agencies, and those funds counted toward the agencies’ small business contracting goals.

If passed, the SBA would be required to submit an annual report detailing the nature of the complaints and the resolutions to Congress.

This is so typical of government in action (or should I say inaction). It is time to elect new government officials who operate in a transparent and honorable capacity, regardless of party affiliation.
