Forklift Helps Twins Play Ball

- 10/7/2009
By the time the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers finished their tie-breaker game last night to decide the Yankees’ opponent in the American League Division Series, stadium workers at the Metrodome were probably snoozing wherever they could lay their heads.

That game was the third in three days that required converting the Metrodome — one of three multipurpose stadiums still serving as home to a Major League Baseball and a National Football League team— from baseball to football and back again.

Bill Lester, the executive director of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, said it takes four to five hours to convert the stadium from baseball to football. The switch back, however, can take up to 12 hours because workers must scrub the football lines off the field.

Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire expressed concern about the condition of the pitching mound and right field. The mound is lifted off the field by forklift and stored under the stands, and the retractable football stands roll out onto right field.

“Right field always gets a little dented,” Gardenhire said. “And I’m always concerned about the mound. They have to rebuild the bottom third of the mound. The last time it happened, it started coming apart.” A pitcher with a long stride, like the 6-foot-11 Twins reliever Jon Rauch, lands on that bottom section with his front foot while delivering a pitch.
Gardenhire’s fears proved unfounded, though. The mound held up and the Twins won the game.
