Fork Drivers Aid Art

- 7/6/2009
London, England – Forklift trucks and drivers are being featured in a performance art piece taking place in London.

Artist Antony Gormley’s One And Other has 2,400 people taking turns over the next 100 days to be placed on the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square for one hour. Eight forklift truck drivers, including driver Paul McFarlane, are assisting in placing participants on the plinth.

A cabin in Trafalgar Square serves as a “green room” for those waiting their turn to appear on the plinth. From there, they step into a basket on the front end loader of McFarlane’s JCB loadall 535-95 and are carried onto the plinth. “We stop at the side of the plinth, and that’s where I have to use all of my skills, smoothly and confidently lifting them into place,” says McFarlane. “Afterwards I do the whole process in reverse.”

“I have never been in a work of art before,” adds McFarlane. “Forklift truck drivers are not often in the spotlight like this.”
