Boston, MA – Retailers are using new types of bar codes, called GS1 DataBars, that can store more data than traditional bar codes, promising new ways for stores to monitor inventory and for customers to save money.

Kelly Kirschner, senior marketing manager at Sinclair International, says DataBars are gradually becoming popular because of the standard bar code's limitations. "The standard bar code takes up too much space to be used on loose produce." DataBars also allow stores to scan for variable weight information.

According to Kirschner, the labels help stores keep better records. If retailers are receiving the same product from multiple vendors, the DataBar can keep track of which suppliers' products are being sold as each DataBar is tied to a purchase record.
