Erie, PA – Automated distribution centers, which used to do material handling equipment maintenance in-house, are shifting toward using outsourced resident contractors.

Although automated distribution centers have traditionally hired maintenance contractors for peak and specialized services, outsourcing represents a long-term, results-orientated relationship with a specialized outside company, which is performing turnkey maintenance functions that traditionally were done by inside staff.

Reasons for changing to resident maintenance programs in automated distribution centers include the desire to optimize system uptime, the need for more technically specialized personnel, initiatives to become more accountable for key performance indicators (KPIs) and subsequently function as more cost-efficient operations, and the desire to maximally extend the life of the distribution center's capital equipment to reduce cost of ownership.
