Continental Tire North America’s Mount Vernon tire plant has received a 2009 Governor’s Sustainability Award for its “achievement in protecting the environment, helping sustain the future and improving the economy,” the Fort Mill, SC-based tire maker said in a release.  The awards, presented annually since 1987 by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), are given to organizations in Illinois that have demonstrated a commitment to the environment through innovative sustainability practices. Conti earned a Continuous Improvement Award—given to past award winners—for its efforts to prevent pollution, which include modifying its carbon black handling system to capture and reuse material, saving about 3M pounds of carbon black material a year; cutting uncured rubber-related scrap by about 400,000 pounds through equipment modification, controls on raw material usage and technological improvements; and receiving raw materials in multiple-use plastic pallets or metal shipping containers instead of single-use wood pallets.
