Stamford, CT – Even if customer orders are increasing, warehouses need to be careful to control labor costs and resist desires to overstaff.

"In most businesses, labor is going to be at least half of your operation's cost," says Bob Betke, vice president with operations consulting firm F. Curtis Barry. "And it's going to be your biggest overall expense."

John Rice, vice president of operations for wholesale pet products supplier PetEdge, recommends looking at scheduling, hiring back part-time workers and cross-training workers as ways to avoid hiring back more workers than are needed.
