Acquisitions Give Alta A Lift

- 1/11/2010
Wixom-based forklift dealer Alta Equipment Co. closed 2009 with a string of acquisitions expected to double the company's employee headcount and triple its annual revenue.

Known before the acquisitions as Alta Lift Truck Services Inc., Alta was founded in 1984 as Michigan's dealer for forklift manufacturer Yale Materials Handling Corp.

The recent deals have added new forklift lines to the company's product portfolio; new territories in Chicago, west Michigan and parts of northern Indiana; and a new construction equipment dealership.

On Dec. 31, Alta bought the buildings, inventories and business lines of Southfield-based construction equipment dealership Wolverine Tractor & Equipment Co. from Volvo Construction Equipment.

Also on Dec. 31, Alta closed a separate stock purchase of Eaton Rapids-based Mid-State Industrial Services Inc.

Mid-State was forklift manufacturer Hyster Co.'s authorized dealership for west Michigan and parts of northern Indiana. It will now be run as a separate business owned by Alta.

Alta was tapped January 1 to be an authorized Hyster forklift dealership in Chicago, an outgrowth of Alta's acquisition of another Chicago forklift dealership in early December.
